TicketsCHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Cincinnati volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-0 sweep of Syracuse on Saturday afternoon inside Huff Hall.
Junior Andrea Simovski led the Bearcats with 11 kills while hitting .500. Freshman Nina Scrucca added nine kills (.368). Senior Sydney Nolan and junior Audrey Rome each contributed six kills. Junior Lilian Entenmann added five kills while hitting .833.
Junior Kate Lijic recorded 34 assists, while freshman Viktoria Ninova led UC with 14 digs.
Cincinnati dominated offensively, hitting .447 as a team compared with Syracuse's .138. The Bearcats also held advantages in kills, 42-33, and blocks, 6-4, while recording eight service aces.
The opening set was the closest of the night, featuring 11 ties and three lead changes. Cincinnati led 20-18 after forcing a Syracuse timeout, but the Orange battled back to tie it, and the two teams traded the lead through 23-23. Back-to-back kills from Simovski put the Bearcats ahead for good, and a Syracuse attack error closed it out, 27-25.
Cincinnati took control early in the second set behind three straight service aces from Simovski that pushed the lead to 13-8. Syracuse trimmed the gap to two points late, but the Bearcats answered with a strong finishing kick from Scrucca to close out the set, 25-19.
Cincinnati never trailed in the third set, jumping ahead 12-4 and cruising on the strength of a .722 hitting percentage while holding Syracuse to just .077. Busignani provided a spark off the bench, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with kills, and closed out the match – and the sweep – with back-to-back kills on a 6-0 run for a 25-11 finish.
