The University of Cincinnati athletic department announced the hiring of Thomas Gentile as Director of Baseball Sports Performance in January of 2023.

Gentile will work directly with the UC baseball program. His responsibilities will include the physical development of student-athletes to perform optimally to decrease their likelihood of injury. He will be closely involved in the preparation of each player's readiness for practices and games via nutrition, recovery and education.

"I am ecstatic that we can bring a Bearcat home that has such diverse wealth of knowledge and expertise at the highest of levels," said Associate AD of Sports Performance Mike Rehfeldt. "The addition of Thomas is a home run hire that will have a far-reaching effect, not only for baseball but our entire sports performance department. I have always been a believer in people first. If we can get the right people in place, it will have a large impact on our department and on our student-athletes' experience. Thomas' role is critical for our ability to compete, recruit, retain and grow."

Gentile was a pitcher and outfielder for the Bearcats from 2009-13. He was a two-time All-Big East All-Academic selection and a University of Cincinnati Legion of Excellence Inductee in 2013, the highest academic honor for student-athletes.

"I am excited for the opportunity to bring my family and I back to our alma mater to join the program that developed me into the person I am today," said Gentile. "My goal is to help each of my athletes grow into the best version of themselves as we put in the hard work to bring a championship to Clifton. Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat!"

Gentile previously served as Assistant Director of Speed, Strength and Conditioning at Coastal Carolina, beginning in the role in 2020. He worked directly with the baseball program.

"We are thrilled to welcome Thomas back to UC as our strength coach," said head coach Scott Googins. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. His passion, work ethic and how he relates to our players will make an immediate impact. Plus, he's a Bearcat!"

Gentile came to Coastal after working for five years as a minor league performance coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers organization from 2015-20. Based out of Glendale, Ariz., he worked with the Dodgers Arizona League affiliate for three seasons (2015, 2016, and 2019), in addition to the Class A affiliate Great Lake Loons in Midland, Mich. for one season (2017) and the short-season affiliate Ogden Raptors in Ogden, Utah (2018).

He assisted with the development and implementation of all aspects of performance, nutrition, and recovery for the players, as well as the rehab and return to play progressions for injured players. He was also responsible for tracking individual and team in-season workloads for more accurate program individuation and the implemented and administered individual off-season training programs for each player as they prepared for the upcoming seasons.

During his time with the Dodgers organization, the team won back-to-back National League (NL) Pennants in 2017 and 2018 and went to back-to-back World Series in those same seasons. The Dodgers also won five-straight NL West Division titles from 2015 to 2019.

Before making the move to professional baseball, Gentile worked in the collegiate ranks at UCLA for two years, first serving as an athletic performance intern in 2014 before accepting a full-time role as an assistant athletic performance coach with the Bruins in 2015.

While at UCLA, Gentile worked directly with the UCLA baseball and men's and women's track and field teams.
