Brad Smith

Brad Smith joined the UC coaching staff in the winter of 2016 with decades of golf experience, including more than 10 years as both an NCAA Division I college coach and a high school coach, as well as over 30 years as a PGA teaching golf professional. As a PGA member, Smith was named the Southern Ohio PGA 2014 Teacher of the Year. He was nominated for the 2015 National PGA Teacher of the Year and for 2015 Golf Digest Best Ohio State Teacher. Operating his own full-service golf company – The Golf Doctor, Smith has given thousands of lessons over the years to students all over the world.
 
Smith comes to UC after, most recently, coaching at Springboro High School where he coached the boys team and individually instructed members of the girls team. He had a winning record of 88% (1783 wins – 238 losses) from 2007 to 2015. His team was Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) South champs eight times and overall GWOC champs twice. The team qualified for State his last three years with a 6th place, 5th place and a 3rd place finish. He help the girls team get to State for the first time in school history and then repeated it the second year. During his tenure, Smith was named the GWOC South Coach of the Year four times.
 
Prior to his stint at the high school level, Smith was the Head Golf Coach at the University of Dayton during 1996 to 2006, serving as the women’s coach for six seasons and then coaching both the men’s and women’s teams for five seasons before resigning due to increased responsibilities with his golfing business. During his time at UD the men’s team had their best A10 Championship with a 4th place finish, a win at the UD Invitational and second place finish at the Robert Morris Invitational.
 
During his first year at University of Cincinnati he helped Coach Carl increase the team’s NCAA Ranking by 13 spots to 120th in the country. His first tournament at UC he helped coach the team to a second place finish and then a 1st place finish later in the season. In his second year (2016-2017) Smith was involved with helping the team have four top 5 finishes and their most successful Conference Championship with a 5th place finish. The team continued to improve their NCAA Ranking in 2017 to 113th in the country. Not only has the team improved on the course, they have improved in the class room with 3.812 team GPA which put the team 9th in the country.
 
Currently while coaching at UC, Smith is the Director of Instruction at Heatherwoode Golf Club giving lessons and helping his athletes reach their dreams. Many of his students go on to play college golf or pursue careers in the golf profession. In addition to his golf work, Smith and his family established a non-profit organization – Smith Brain Connections, connecting health care professionals to educational opportunities about the brain and trauma to better support patients and their families. Smith resides in Springboro with his wife of over 30 years, Teri. They have two sons Spencer and Ty. Spencer is studying for his PhD at OSU while Ty is at UC pursing his Masters.
