CINCINNATI, Ohio---The Black team overcame the weather elements, claiming the title in the University of Cincinnati intrasquad fall World Series with a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at a frigid Marge Schott Stadium. Behind three shutout innings from freshman starter Scott Brothers, team Black won the series with a pair of victories, along with two ties.
The game, which was limited to five innings, featured just eight hits, with the winning team totaling only three. No player on either team had multiple hits, but Tony Campana reached base twice, scoring two of Black's three runs and stealing a pair of bases.
The Black squad went right to work in the first, with Campana drawing a lead-off walk from Brian Garman. Campana moved to second on a ground ball out and finally scored when Cameron Satterwhite connected on a two-out single to right. Black added to its lead in the third with Campana again at the center. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Campana utilized his tremendous speed, stealing second and third and then scoring on a Garman wild pitch.
The final tallies of the day did not come until the fifth, with Black jumping to a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Johnson that plated Dustin Alvey. The Red team finally broke through in the last of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Tim McEndy. That run would prove too little to late however, as Sean Munninghoff worked out a two on, one out jam to earn a save and preserve his team's 3-1 victory.
Game five brings an end to the fall practice season for the Bearcats. UC will open the regular season in February against a schedule that will be announced soon.
