VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Cincinnati men's and women's track and field teams sit in ninth and seventh place, respectively, after day two at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships on Saturday (May 7).
The men's squad was paced by 2010 BIG EAST champion Brian Zimmerman, who finished fourth in the javelin with a 202' 5" throw. Freshman Kyle Kubera placed seventh in the decathlon, accumulating 5683 points. Senior Troy Cooper was eighth with a 52' 9-1/2" shot put, while classmate Mike Foley placed ninth in the high jump, clearing 6' 6-1/4".
Senior David Barry was sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:06.74. Four Bearcats qualified for Sunday finals, including Terence Somerville, who posted the fasted time in the 110 meter hurdles with a 13.92. Somerville will be joined in the 110 hurdle finals by Dailyn Moore (14.50) and Mario Cannon (14.93). Senior Chase Van Cura moved into the finals of the 400 meter dash with a 47.88 mark in prelims.
The women were paced by a pair of fifth-place finishes, one each by Kaitlyn Good and Mackenzie Fields. Good accumulated 4657 points to finish fifth in the heptathlon. Fields led four Bearcats in the Top 10 in the pole vault with a 12' 11-1/2" clearance. Michelle Eby was sixth (12' 7-1/2"), followed by Kayla Dunn in seventh (12' 3-1/2") and Sarah Rasnick in ninth (12' 3-1/2").
Frida Akerstrom, who finished fifth in the hammer throw on Friday, placed sixth in the shot put with a UC freshman-record heave of 49' 7-1/4".
On the track, seven Bearcats qualified for finals on Sunday, led by Natasha Burse who moved into the 100 and 200 meter finals. She posted the second-fastest 100 time with an 11.55 and was third in the 200 prelims, posting a 23.54. Aricka Rhodes qualified for the 400 meter dash final with a 54.46, while Kathy Klump posted a 2:08.53 in the 800 meter prelims.
Paris Campbell (13.85) and Hauna Dawkins (14.00) both moved into the finals of the 100 meter hurdles while Sharika Thompson qualified for the 400 meter hurdles with a 1:02.36.
The final day of competition gets underway at 10 a.m. on Sunday from the Jumbo Elliott Track in Villanova, Pa.
