CINCINNATI – As announced Tuesday by the American Athletic Conference, University of Cincinnati men's soccer sophomore defender Patrick Nielsen has been named the AAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year as well as being a unanimous selection to the all-conference team. As a unit, the Bearcats were picked to finish seventh in the league.

Nielsen (Copenhagen, Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) is looking to build off of a stellar freshman season in which he was both AAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team selections in addition to earning All-Ohio Second Team recognition. The native Dane was one of many newcomers who contributed to UC's success in 2016. Starting each of the Bearcats' 17 matches, he tallied two assists while helping anchor the back line of the defense which recorded seven shutouts.

Nielsen is UC's first AAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in its five years the league and its second Player of the Year distinction after John Manga was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year prior to the 2015 season.

Following earning a 9-7-1 overall record in 2016, including a program-high fourth place finish in The American, the Bearcats will face a challenging and exciting schedule in 2017. This year's slate will feature 10 home contests, highlighted by hosting crosstown rival Xavier on Sept. 8. AAC play will include seven matches including visiting NCAA Tournament teams USF and Tulsa.
