CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track & field program held its 38th Red-Black Intrasquad meet Friday afternoon inside the Armory Fieldhouse with Team Red coming from behind to grab a slim victory over Team Black, 102-98. Team Black did win the women's portion of the competition, 52-50, while Team Red took home the win in the men's competition, 52-46.
The meet consisted of 12 events with six each on the track and in the field with Team Red combing to claim 13 event wins while Team Black secured 11. Eight meet records were either tied or broken on the day with six coming in the women's events and two from the men. Overall, nine event winners from last year returned and won the same event again while two rookies also were victorious in their first competitions in the collegiate season.
// BREAKING RECORDS
On the women's side, Annette Echikunwoke broke event records in both events she competed, including the weight throw, in which she obliterated her previous record by nearly six feet (5-10.50) with a winning toss of 22.26m (73-00.50). She also broke the shot put record with her winning heave of 16.11m (52-10.25), surpassing the previous mark of 15.22m (49-11.25) that was set in 2014 by Frida Akerstrom. Staying in the field, Brooke Catherine won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.92m (12-10.25) to move past Mackenzie Fields' mark of 3.91m (12-10.00) that was cleared in 2010.
On the track, the short sprints produced a trio of records for the women with Tiona Lattimore (55m), Angelica Lightfoot (55m hurdles) and Haisha Bisiolu (200m) each recording top marks. Lattimore ran 6.6 to surpass Natasha Burse's previous record of 6.7 (2010) while Bisiolu ran to a time of 24.6 to better the 200m mark of 25.0 that was previously run by both Kenya Woodall (2015) and Burse (2010). Lightfoot's time of 7.7 tied the hurdles mark run by DanHeisha Harding in 2011.
On the men's side, both Austin Edwards and Mykel Chambers turned in times of 6.1 to tie for the meet record in the 55m dash, a time that has been run five times, including each of the last two years by Jimmy Brooks. In the field, Alex Bloom and Albert Kalala both cleared 2.10m (6-10.75) in the high jump to better Bloom's record mark of 2.09m (6-10.50) that he cleared last year.
// COMING BACK
With the meet nearing its completion and only three events remaining to be scored, Team Red held a slim 92-90 lead. The men's pole vault competition concluded with Adrian Valles and Nicholas Lauria going 1-2 to grab eight points and put Team Black ahead, 98-92, with only the relays remaining. In fact, with the score as it was, Team Red would need to win both races to grab the team title, and that is just what they did.
First, the team of Lattimore, Sylvana Ross, Sydney Hess and Bisiolu combined to get the stick around Armory Fieldhouse in a time of 4:04.0 to beat Team Black by nine seconds and draw Team Red closer in the standing, 98-97. From there, the men's 4x400m relay would prove to be a winner-takes-all scenario. In that race, both teams battled throughout before Team Red prevailed, 3:27.5 to 3:27.7, to grab the five points and give them the overall win, 102-98. The victorious men's relay team was comprised of Ryan Greene, Connor Davis, Logan Baker and Brooks.
// WIN AGAIN
Nine events were won by the same individual as one year ago, including four on the women's side and five on the men's. Echikunwoke swept the shot put and weight throw for the second year in a row while Catherine (pole vault) and Lightfoot (55m hurdles) also repeated. On the men's side, Kelvin Williams won the 55m hurdles, Halen Witcher was victorious in the 400m dash once again, Baker took home the win in the 800m run, Bloom captured the high jump and Valles once again claimed the pole vault.
