NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The final day of action at the Music City Challenge for the University of Cincinnati track and field program was filled with strong marks, including three school records falling as the Bearcats continued their push toward the American Athletic Conference Championships ahead of them in two weeks. The women broke a pair of records as Brooke Catherine snapped the pole vault mark while the team of Tiona Lattimore, Haisha Bisiolu, Deanna Gesicki and Bryana Robinson combined to reset their own 4x400m relay mark. The final record came on the men's side as Austin Edwards tied the mark in the 60m dash.
// RECORD BREAKER - 4x400m RELAY
The women's relay team, which made history at the end of last year's outdoor season by becoming the first UC relay team to both qualify to nationals and earn All-America honors, was at it again tonight as they ran 3:36.96, bettering their own mark from 2017 by 4.37 seconds and becoming the first UC women's team to run under 3:40 indoors. Their time, which ranks the among the Top 15 nationally, is the fourth-fastest mark ever run in program history, including both indoor and outdoor, with all four being attained by this quartet. The team has broken the school's 4x400m records (indoor and outdoor) five times together in the past two years. Lattimore led the relay off and split 53.7 before Bisiolu ran 54.5. Gesicki's leg was calculated at 55.5 before Robinson ran 52.9, nearly bringing the team to the win as Ohio State edged the Bearcats at the line, running 3:36.93.
// HOT 400m
To get a fast relay, you need fast runners and each individual not only showed that with their splits in the relay, but also in the open 400m that each woman ran earlier in the day. Robinson has the fastest time of all the Bearcats as she finished third in the meet at 53.31, just off her school-record time of 53.08. Lattimore was fourth overall as she ran 53.75 to improve her standing at #3 all-time in program history before Bisiolu ran 54.46 to take the #4 spot all-time. Lastly, Gesicki raced to a time of 56.28 and moved onto the Top 10 ledger for the first time at #10. This means that all four women of the same relay are currently ranked in the all-time Top 10 at the same time.
// MORE ON LATTIMORE'S MARKS
Lattimore was at it again Saturday as she raced in three events and helped secure times that rank in the Top 10 of UC history. Individually, she ran 7.43 in the 60m final to improve her #2 all-time standing and moved to within 0.03 of the school record (7.40). She followed that up with her 400m run to #3 all-time before leading off the relay to a school-record time. Individually, Lattimore has run 11 open races this indoor season and recorded a personal-best time in 10 of those races.
// RECORD BREAKER - CATHERINE
The Music City Challenge has been a great meet for Catherine in recent years. Last year, she cleared 3.89m (12-09.00) for her indoor PR and a mark that ranked her #8 all-time in program history. She has bettered that mark several times this year and did so twice today. Recently, she had cleared 4.12m before today getting over 4.15m. She followed that up with a second-attempt clearance at 4.26m (13-11.75) before missing three times at 4.31m (14-01.75). With her best today, she not only moved into the Top 20 nationally, but also brought her season-long PR improvement to 1' 2.75".
// RECORD BREAKER - EDWARDS
Edwards has been close all season to taking down the 60m record and nearly did today as he settled for a tie for the top time in program history by running 6.78. The record was set in 2005 by Kenny Wade and now Edwards has added his name to the pinnacle. Heading into today's action, Edwards had run an identical 6.81 in his three previous races in a row before running 6.82 in the preliminary round. Then, in the final, he ran a PR for the fourth time this season and moved from #2 into a tie for #1 in program history. Couple that with his #5 long jump mark of 7.62m (25-00.00) he posted last week and Edwards is a threat to score big points at the conference meet.
// GOING THE DISTANCES
The women's distance events saw more times added to the all-time Top 10 charts Saturday as three individuals improved their standings over previous bests. Leading things off was Sam Mikula, who ran in the first race of the day, the 3,000m run. In the event, the true freshman ran 10:01.07 to add her name to the list to join teammate Hannah Markel on the chart after she joined one week prior (9:55.22 at #3). With Mikula's run, the women have added names to the 3,000m list three times in the past two seasons (two remain as of today), which is the most since 2011.
Speaking of Markel, the redshirt freshman ran 5:02.29 in the mile to move up to #4 all-time and become just the fourth UC woman to run under 5:03 in the event. Alexis Anton, a member of that sub-5:03 group, improved her PR in the 800m run as she posted a time of 2:13.38 to move up to #6 all-time in program history.
// MEECE HITS ANOTHER BIG TOSS
Earlier this year, Sam Meece posted several strong throws in the weight event and reached as his as 18.54m (60-10.00) to rank #4 all-time at UC and also smash the school's freshman record. Today, he took aim at the shot put and hit a big toss of 16.37m (53-08.50), a nearly 2' improvement. With that toss, he moved onto the all-time Top 10 ledger at #10 and moved closer to the freshman record in that event, which is currently at 16.97m.
// MORE SPEED
• For the second time this season, Angelica Lightfoot has posted a PR in the 60m hurdles and, for the second time, saw that time listed on the all-time Top 10. Today, she ran 8.63 in the prelims to turn in the #9 time in UC history while also finishing ninth in the round, leaving her one spot shy of reaching the final.
• Isaiah McCall, who had a solid time of 8.15 in the same event and missed the final as the ninth-place finisher in the prelims, also raced in the 60m dash and tied his PR at 6.89, a time that also ranks #8 in program history.
// ON DECK
One final meet remains on the schedule before the championship season arrives for the Bearcats as a small group of individuals will travel north to Columbus Friday evening for the Buckeye Tune-up at Ohio State.
