CINCINNATI - The final grades for the Spring 2018 semester at the University of Cincinnati have been posted with Bearcats Athletics posting another banner semester in the classroom as the overall departmental grade-point average (GPA) rose to a record 3.328 as 16 of the University's 17 athletic programs posted a 3.0 GPA or better.
"When our staff first presented the numbers, the overall impact of what our student-athletes just accomplished didn't hit really me other than the fact we set a department record," Dr. Joe Luckey, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS), said. "After further review, the numbers really show how special this University and department are. So many records for the department and teams were set in one semester. We are winning in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. We aren't just saying it in a plan; it is actually be executed by everyone in the building. I am really proud of our SASS staff and the academic expectations they live and talk about on a daily basis."
Individual records also were broken this semester as 76 percent of all Bearcats student-athletes (305 in total) earned Bearcats Honor Roll status (3.0 GPA) while a record 51 percent (207 student-athletes) held a 3.4 GPA or better to earn placement on the Dean's List. Of those honorees, 46 Bearcats posted a perfect 4.0 semester GPA to be named a TopCat, which is four shy of the record 50 earned this past fall.
Overall, the departmental GPA of 3.328 is the highest ever for the Bearcats, surpassing the 3.253 GPA that was recorded last Spring, an increase of 0.075 over the previous record. To rise to that level and achieve the department's 20th consecutive grading period with a 3.0 GPA or better, 10 different teams recorded a GPA of 3.4 or better while seven were over a 3.5. Of note, football, men's golf (for the fourth semester in a row), men's swimming & diving (the 2018 AAC Champions), women's swimming & diving and volleyball all posted their highest GPAs ever.
The women's golf team led the way once again this semester as they recorded a department-high 3.788 GPA while the male counterparts posted the highest GPA of all men's teams at 3.738. Five other teams recorded a GPA of 3.5 or higher, including tennis (3.778), women' soccer (3.703), volleyball (3.694), women's swimming & diving (3.631) and women's cross country (3.547).
Of special note, members of the cheer and dance teams also found success in the classroom, too. Cheer saw 31 of its members record a 3.0 GPA or better with 24 of those individuals recording a 3.4 GPA or higher to earn a place on the Dean's List while 22 members of the dance team posted a 3.0 GPA or better with 19 of those individuals earning Dean's List accolades.
