Dr. Joe Luckey

Dr. Joe Luckey, a Cincinnati native, returned to his hometown in November 2012 to lead the University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics’ academic services unit.

He currently serves as the Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS), where he oversees all aspects of student-athlete academics and the Student-Athlete Development Academy. In addition, he serves as the department’s liaison to the Athletic Advisory Committee. Dr. Luckey is the sport administrator for baseball, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. A member of the department’s executive staff, he also plays a key leadership role as chair of the One Team Committee.  In 2025, Luckey assumed a leadership role with former athletes through C-Club and has assisted John Cunningham with the C-Club AD Advisory council since fall 2024.

Since his arrival in 2012, Cincinnati student-athletes have achieved sustained and historic academic success. The department has established record team and overall GPAs while increasing academic performance across all programs. UC has consistently ranked among the nation’s top five in NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR), while Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores have led the conference and ranked among national leaders. Notably, 95 percent of student-athletes who complete their senior seasons at UC graduate, and that number climbs to 99 percent over the last decade. This sustained excellence has also included a significant increase in student-athletes earning Academic All-America recognition.

A cornerstone of Dr. Luckey’s leadership is the Student-Athlete Development Academy, where he implemented the “Bearcats Go Pro” initiative—a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare student-athletes for life after sport. The program is centered on four core pillars: Leadership, Personal Development, Career Engagement, and Community Impact.  Bearcats will go pro in one of three ways: Employment, Graduate School, or professionally in their sport.

Under his leadership, SASS has also launched several impactful initiatives. UC Athletics' SAAS staff, the driving force behind a tablet (iPads) implementation program for Bearcats' student-athletes, was among a group of leaders across campus who shared the inaugural E-Learning Program of the Year Award at the All-University Faculty Awards Celebration, held in 2018.  Team FEMO provides structured support for student-athletes whose playing careers have ended but who remain committed to completing their degrees. Additionally, SASS has developed targeted outreach efforts to reconnect former student-athletes who did not graduate, resulting in successful degree completion pathways particularly for former football and men’s basketball players dating back to the 1980s. Strong partnerships with UC colleges and advising units have led to the creation of innovative programming and courses focused on branding, financial literacy, leadership, career readiness, and academic skill development.

Dr. Luckey is an active leader at the national level, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A), the premier organization for athletics academic services. His extensive involvement with N4A includes serving as president (2011–12), president-elect, past president, chair of the strategic planning committee, and division director for professional development. He has also hosted two regional conferences.  Currently, Luckey leads the N4A Consulting 360 Working Group.

In recognition of his contributions to the profession, Dr. Luckey received N4A’s Distinguished Service Award in 2016 and is a recipient of the organization’s highest honor, the Lan Hewlett Award. He has been a faculty member for N4A’s Professional Development Institute since its inception in 2005. His commitment to mentoring is reflected in the success of dozens of former graduate assistants, interns, and staff members now working in athletics academic services.

Prior to joining Cincinnati, Dr. Luckey spent 10 years at the University of Memphis as Director of Athletic Academics, where he led the Center for Athletic Academic Services. He also assisted with NCAA eligibility certification, served as an academic instructor, and held leadership roles on NCAA and campus committees, including five years as chair of the Conference USA Academic Advisors Committee. During his tenure, Memphis achieved record-setting academic success, including more than 90 percent student-athlete graduation rates, 17 Academic All-Americans, and all programs exceeding NCAA APR benchmarks.

Dr. Luckey’s scholarly work includes contributions to Houghton Mifflin’s Becoming a Master Student-Athlete, a doctoral dissertation examining NCAA Proposition 48 and Proposition 16, and postdoctoral research comparing student-athlete and non-student-athlete satisfaction. He has delivered numerous presentations at national and regional conferences and served on the NCAA Division I-A Task Force on Student-Athlete Development.

He began his professional career at Austin Peay State University, where he spent 10 years progressing from intern to assistant athletic director.  He was sports supervisor for men’s golf and coed rifle.

Dr. Luckey earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Dayton, a master’s degree in kinesiology from Indiana University, and a doctorate in administration and supervision from Tennessee State University.

He and his wife, Melissa, have three sons: Adam, Tyler, and Ryan (all Bearcats). A proud graduate of La Salle High School, Dr. Luckey’s Cincinnati roots run deep—his parents previously worked on the Cincinnati Reds gameday staff.
