CINCINNATI - Late Thursday night, three members of the University of Cincinnati track & field team competed in the 10,000m runs at the 125th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., with all three navigating the historic track at Franklin Field to personal-best times and placement on the program's all-time Top 10. Aaron Bienenfeld and Andrew Schille swept the men's race with Bienenfeld winning in 29:34.37 and Schille just behind him in 29:41.85 while Hannah Markel took ninth in the women's race with a time of 35:45.47.
// MEN'S 10,000m
The final race of the day in Philadelphia was the men's 10,000m that saw the two UC entrants take the Top 2 spots with Bienenfeld winning the race and Schille taking runner-up honors. Bienenfeld has had great success on the track in the past as he ran 29:52.13 in Philadelphia last year to finish fourth in the race and post the #3 time in program history. Fast forward to this year's race and he lowered his best by nearly 18 seconds to finish first in 29:34.37 and break the program record by nearly three seconds after Eric Finan ran 29:37.29 in 2011.
Schille had quite an impressive run as well as his time of 29:41.85 not only places him third on the Bearcats' all-time Top 10, but lowers his personal best by over one minute after he ran 30:54.23 during his time with Northern Kentucky. The duo now rank third and fourth in the American Athletic Conference and become the third set of teammates to post Top 10 marks in UC history in the same with the previous pairs being Finan (currently #2) and Tommy Morgan (#7) in 2011 and Colin Cotton (#4) and Kevin Fink (#6) in 2013.
// PENN HISTORY
While Bienenfeld's victory marks the seventh all-time title claimed by a Bearcats athlete at the historic meet, it also marks the first win on the track in program history with the previous six coming in field events or the decathlon. The most recent Penn Relays champion came in 2017 when Macklin Tudor won the men's discus Championship of America flight. Other winners for the Bearcats include both Adrian Valles (men's pole vault championship) and Leah Heckman (women's shot put open) in 2016; Rebecka Abrahamsson (women's triple jump) in 2015; Ian Jarman (men's hammer throw) in 2008; and Mike Yoder (men's decathlon) in 2001.
// WOMEN'S 10,000m
Prior to the men's race, the women took to the track for their long distance race where Markel turned in a time of 35:45.47 for the #3 slot on the program's all-time Top 10. Not only did Markel post a big mark in her first time running the event, she posted the fastest time for a UC woman in over 11 years as both Lilian Jelimo (35:22.35) and Jill Glassmeyer (35:44.73) raced to the Top 2 times at UC in 2008. Markel is currently ranked #8 in the AAC standings following her run.
