CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track & field team closed out another successful weekend of competition Saturday as the Bearcats added eight more marks to the program's all-time Top 10 while nearly adding two more as action came to a close at the Rod McCravy Memorial meet inside the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky. Among those eight marks were two recorded by rookies, including Maddie Walker in the mile run and Hannah Jackson in the shot put as both freshmen continue to impress in their debut season
// CHASING CHANDLER
Caisja Chandler had another solid day on the track as she continued her movement toward the top of the 60m dash ledger with two races on the day. Ahead of yesterday's first-round race, Chandler held a PR of 7.43, which ranked her third all-time at the end of her freshman season last year. In her season debut, she lowered that time to 7.42 to move into a tie for second. Today, after running 7.47 in the semifinals to earn a berth into the final, Chandler lowered her time once again, this time placing fourth in the race in 7.41 for the out-right #2 position and leaving her just 0.01 seconds off the all-time record of 7.40 that Natasha Burse recorded in 2011.
// MADDIE IS NOT WALKER-ING
Staying on the track, Walker raced for the second time this year for the Bearcats and, for the second time, recorded the #4 time in program history. After running the #4 time of 9:55.27 two weeks ago in the 3,000m run, Walker came back today and ran the mile in 4:59.09 to also grab the #4 position all-time at UC. One of four women to run times that rank among the all-time Top 10 in both distances, a list that includes teammates Hannah Markel and Sam Mikula, Walker is now just the third UC woman to post times under 5 minutes in the mile and 10 minutes in the 3,000m in a career, joining Markel and Angie Kist (2002).
// DOUBLED UP
In the shot put, Jackson recorded a mark of 14.20m (46-07.25) to not only better her personal best, but also add her name to the all-time Top 10 as she now sits ninth overall. With her improvement in the event by 10.25" after throwing 13.94m (45-09.00) earlier this season, Jackson is now one of six women to hold marks in the program's Top 10 in both the shot put and weight throw as she currently ranks #5 with a best of 17.94m (58-10.25).
// BOUNCING ALONG
The triple jump continued to see a seasonal trend occur as Kennedy Marable edged out Irati Mitxelena in the event one meet removed from Mitxelena having the upper hand. This week, Marable bounced her way to a mark of 12.64m (41-05.75) to post an improvement of 7.25" over her previous PR and improve her #3 standing on the all-time Top 10 as just the third woman in UC history to post a mark of 41' or better. Mitxelena was just behind her at 12.61m (41-04.50) as the duo placed third and fourth, respectively, but, when removing the two post-collegiate competitors from the event, the UC pair finished 1-2 overall among collegiate entries.
// BIG POINTS FOR BERTHENET
The two-day, seven-event heptathlon came to a close early Saturday with Damien Berthenet finishing second overall and first among collegiate entrants as the senior accumulated 5,502 points for the #3 score all-time at UC. Berthenet, who moved into the overall lead in the American, became just the third UC man to score 5,500 or more in the indoor event, joining current volunteer coach Alex Bloom (5,659) and current event coach Chris Wineberg (5,616) in that grouping.
On the day, Berthenet opened with a time of 8.49 in the 60m hurdles for 862 points before moving on to the pole vault where he cleared 4.60m (15-01.00) for another 790 points. That clearance, his best of the year, ranks #5 on the program's all-time heptathlon Top 10 list. In the final event, the Frenchman ran 2:44.72 in the 1,000m run for 822 points, turning in the #4 time in UC heptathlon history. Overall, he scored 2,474 points on Day Two, the #4 total in program history.
// HIGH FIVE!
For the second meet in a row at Kentucky, the men's pole vault proved to be a big event for the Bearcats. Two weeks ago, Austin Goolsby cleared 5.05m to move into a tie for #9 all-time at UC while becoming the 12th man to joining the Bearcats' 5 meter club. This week, it was Nicholas Lauria's turn as he cleared 5.00m (16-04.75) to become the 13th UC man over 5 meters indoors. Despite his big clearance, he just missed the programs all-time Top 10 as he is tied for #11.
// ALMOST HAD IT
Speaking of nearly joining the all-time Top 10, Brandon White was right there as well in the triple jump as he bounced his way to a best of 14.45m (47-05.00) on his sixth and final attempt to finish fifth in the meet. His season and personal-best mark has him #11 all-time, missing the #10 position by 0.02m (14.47m).
// UP NEXT
The Bearcats return to action next Friday and Saturday when they venture to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Relays.
