CINCINNATI - For the second day in a row, the University of Cincinnati track and field team produced several spectacular times on the track at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station, Texas, as two more Bearcats records were broken and nine other marks recorded that rank among the best in program history, including two that rank second all-time.
// LEATHER TAKES MILE MARK
One day removed from helping the distance medley relay run a school record, Ellie Leather was back on the track in the mile, racing the distance for the first for the Bearcats since transferring into the program ahead of the season. In the race, the junior finished third overall as she finished in 4:47.41 to not only smash her own personal best, but also take down the school record. In the record books, Leather's time is exactly two seconds ahead of the previous best of 4:49.41 that Angie Kist ran 18 years prior in 2002. Leather's time also lowered her previous personal best by 7.56 seconds as she became on the second woman in UC history to post a time under 4:50 ever. In the same race, Sam Mikula raced to a time of 4:58.62 to post the #3 time in program history.
// BORZOR BLASTS OFF
Last week at the Indiana Relays, Chris Borzor burst back onto the scene for the Bearcats as he ran 21.45 in the 200m and 48.37 in the 400m to register the #3 and #10 times in program history, respectively. Move ahead to this week and Borzor upped his performances once again as he opened the day lowering his time in the 400m to 47.70, the #6 mark all-time as just the seventh man to run under 48 seconds in UC history. Then, in the 200m, Borzor made program history as he won the 200m in 20.92, breaking the school record by 0.15 and becoming the first man in UC history to run under 21 seconds indoors. The previous record was 21.07 and was run by Kenny Wade in 2004.
// WINNER, WINNER
Two Bearcats also joined Borzor on top of the podium as event winners with Caisja Chandler taking gold in the 200m for the women and Aaron Bienenfeld winning the mile for the men. Chandler raced to a winning time of 23.56 after placing fourth in the 60m dash with a personal-best-tying time of 7.41, the #2 time in program history. Bienenfeld continued his excellent senior campaign as he lowered his mile time to 4:04.77 to move up to #2 as he just missed the record of 4:04.14 held by Jeff Johnson since 1984 by 0.63 seconds.
// TOP 10 SPRINTS
Two women in the sprints added their names to the Top 10 ledgers with Victoria Abunaw bettering her time in the 60m hurdles and Faith Banks joining the 400m list for the first time. Abunaw ran to a time of 8.55 for the #8 position in program history as she bettered her time by 0.01 seconds. In the 400m, Banks raced to a time of 55.39 to take over the #8 spot in that distance.
// TOP 10 DISTANCES
Three distance runners posted Top 10 marks with all three adding their names to the lists for the first time. For the women, Katrina Patterson ran 9:50.99 in the 3,000m run to not only become just the fourth woman at UC to run under 9:51, but also post the #4 time ever after taking over 11 seconds off her personal best. Staying with the women, Sydney Kilgore, who was a member of the UC soccer team the past two seasons and ran the 800m leg of the record DMR one night earlier, ran 2:13.38 in the 800m run to record the #9 time ever. The men saw Toni Banos race to a time of 4:11.40 in the mile to grab the #10 spot on the lists.
// UP NEXT
The Bearcats will return to the road next weekend as they are set to take place in their final regular-season indoor meet of 2020 when they take part in the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tenn. The two-day meet, which runs Friday and Saturday, February 14-15, will be hosted by Vanderbilt and will be the final competition for the team before heading to the 2020 AAC Championships in Birmingham, Ala., two weeks later.
