CINCINNATI – Cassie McLay has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic careers with the University of Cincinnati tennis program, Head Coach Eric Toth announced today. McLay, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., will have three years of eligibility with the Bearcats after playing her freshman season at Appalachian State.
"We are excited to add Cassie to our program starting in the Fall," Toth said. "Cassie was in the middle of a successful freshman campaign at Appalachian State before her season was cut short like everyone else. I believe Cassie will impact both our singles and doubles line-up in a positive way once we are able to get started again."
In her first collegiate season, McLay posted a 14-12 overall record in singles and was 16-6 in doubles. In singles play, McLay was second overall in wins for ASU as she went 10-7 in the fall and 4-5 in duals where she played primarily at the #3 and #4 singles positions. In the fall, she found success in a trio of tournaments as she reached the semifinals of the Lakewood Intercollegiate Clay Classic, the quarterfinals of the College of Charleston Invitational and the third round of the ITA Regional Championships.
McLay also teamed with Maria Zacarias as the Mountaineers' #1 doubles tandem throughout the season. In the fall, the duo went 3-0 in the Charleston event to capture the tournament title and also went 4-0 in the Seahawk Invitational. At the Lakewood event, the duo combined to post an 8-5 upset of the #59 doubles team in the nation of Madeline Meredith & Georgie Axon (Auburn). After an 11-3 fall record, the duo went 5-3 in duals (all at #1).
Prior to college, McLay was a four-year varsity letter winner at Boca Raton Community High School. During her prep career, she participated in nine singles tournaments and five doubles events. During that time, she posted a 3-0 record in singles play at the United States Tennis Association (UTSA) Florida Level 4 Summer Smash Sectional Championships before picking up a pair of wins at the USTA National Winter Championships. McLay graduated as a four-star recruit and ranked #35 in the nation for the Class of 2019 according the Tennis Recruiting Network Top 100 including ranking #4 in Florida.
