Birmingham, Ala. – After day one of competition the Cincinnati track and field teams both sit in first place at the AAC Championship Meet.
The men's team was led by a win in the long jump by senior Austin Edwards. Edwards jumped 7.60 meters (24-11.25) to take first in the event. The women's distance medley relay made up of seniors Sam Mikula and Ellie Leather and juniors Faith Banks and Carmen Licht took first with a time of 11:26.86, setting a new school record and conference meet record.
Senior Sam Meece set a school record in the men's weight throw with his throw of 21.17m (69-05.50). The men's DMR of Jonathan Harley, Siro Pina Cardona, Zach Robinson and Tyler Wirth set a new record in the event with a 9:44.67.
PERFORMANCES TO NOTE
Women's Distance Medley Relay
The relay comprised of Mikula running 1200 meters, Banks running 400 meters, Licht running 800 meters and Leather finishing the race with the mile. ECU and Tulsa took an early lead in the event but the Bearcats tracked them down throughout the duration of the race, with Leather making up almost ten seconds in the mile.
Men's Long Jump
Edwards had an outstanding performance in the long jump, with three of his six jumps coming in further than the second-place finisher. His 7.60m jump is his season best.
Men's Weight Throw
Sam Meece finished out his weight throw career by breaking his own school record, improving the mark to 21.17m (69-05.50). His throw took second place at the conference championship meet. Teammates Danny Jones and Jacob Rieman finished sixth and eighth respectively, also scoring points for the team.
Men's Distance Medley Relay
The men's relay was made up of Harley in the 1200 meter run, Robinson in the 400 meter dash, Cardona in the 800 meter run and Wirth in the mile. The Bearcats finished second behind Tulsa in the event.
Women's Weight Throw
Hannah Jackson led the Bearcats women's throwing squad to all make it to the finals in the event, where Jackson finished in third with a throw of 18.66m (61-02.75). Jane Sensibaugh finished fourth with and Alexandria Hunter finished seventh to score more points for the Bearcats in the event.
Women's Pentathlon
Senior Katie Straus took third in the AAC Championship with her performances in the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m run. Straus recorded the fastest time of all competitors in the 60m hurdles and scored third in the 800m run.
Men's Pole Vault
Austin Goolsby took third in the pole vault with a vault of 5.02m (16-05.50).
Next Up
The AAC Championship meet will continue tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. CST with the remaining events in the men's heptathlon. With four events scored in the heptathlon, senior Cannon Riddle sits in fourth with 2931 points, senior Damien Berthenet sits in fifth with 2874 points and freshman Dominique Hall sits in seventh with 2801 points.
