CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team concluded competition as hosts of the UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center on Saturday.
"It was another good weekend of competition where all three teams tested us every match. It is exactly what you want this time of year." said head coach Eric Toth. "I feel our team will be well prepared for our next stop at Regionals in Knoxville."
Cincinnati welcomed Purdue, Miami (OH) and Xavier for a hidden dual format invitational this weekend, taking on each team in doubles and singles. Purdue swept the champion honors with Liz Norman and Kennedy Gibbs securing the doubles title and Norman also claiming the singles title.
The Bearcats opened play on Friday with three doubles wins over Miami (OH). Kelli Niehaus and Maria Santilli secured the initial win at the first position before freshman pair Katie Ferguson and Natasha Opaciuch claimed their matchup on court three. Hayley Hirsch and Sanjana Reddy picked up the third win over the RedHawks, taking their match 6-3.
The Bearcats closed out the first day of competition with two singles victories, each in straight sets, over Purdue. Niehaus secured a win on court three 6-1, 6-3, while Ferguson earned a 6-4, 6-0 win on court four.
Action resumed on Saturday with two doubles victories over Purdue. Sofia Bruno and Cassie McLay claimed a doubles victory on court two, while the pair of Ferguson and Opaciuch picked up their second doubles win of the event on court three.
The Bearcats picked up four more singles wins in their matchup with Miami (OH) as McLay, Opaciuch, Ferguson and Hirsch earned straight set wins.
Cincinnati concludes their fall season when the Bearcats travel to the USTA/ITA Fall Regional Championships from Oct. 20-24 in Knoxville, Tenn.
