TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team battled back to force a match-clinching final court before falling 4-3 to Memphis inside Western Athletic Club on Friday.
"A terrific effort today by our team, but unfortunately it was not enough to get the win." head coach Eric Toth said. "Memphis is a very battle tested team. They have played a great schedule and are always going to be well prepared. Our girls can feel good though about how we competed today as we head into Sunday."
Memphis clinched the doubles point at the top two courts to claim early momentum in the match.
After the Tigers posted another point to open singles action, sophomore Elizabeth Pendergast answered back for the Bearcats with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win on court one. Pendergast has now won four of her last five matches at the top position.
Trailing 3-1, sophomore Callie Flanagan clinched another two-set win, 6-3, 6-2, on court five. Redshirt junior Cassie McLay responded to a dropped first set to secure the final two sets each by the score of 7-5 on court two. With the match tied at three, Memphis picked up a win on court six to take the match.
Cincinnati closes out the weekend by hosting crosstown rival Xavier at Traber-Talbert Tennis Center at 1 p.m. ET.
