TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Memphis in the first round of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships at USTA National Campus on Wednesday.
"While Memphis was the better team and earned the win today, what is most important to recognize is the contributions of Maria Santilli, Kelli Niehaus, Cassie McLay, Sofia Bruno and Hayley Hirsch," head coach Eric Toth said. "They have all made their mark on this program in their own way and have been great representatives of the program. Our program moves to new territory starting next fall; there is a lot of work needs to be done to prepare for where we are going and it is going to be a very exciting thing to be a part of."
Cincinnati concludes its dual match season 8-14 overall, 0-4 in the AAC.
Cincinnati secured an initial advantage with leads at two doubles positions before Memphis answered back with wins on court one and two to take the first point. The Tigers maintained their early momentum to secure the next three courts and clinch the match win.
Freshman Katie Ferguson was leading 6-4, 4-1 on her court when the match was decided.
