BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Patrick Kiprop and junior Claire Curtsinger secured first-place while notching course records as the University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2024 season on Friday.
Kiprop dominated the race as he claimed the men's 6k title with a course record time of 17:23.96. The Kenya native held a blistering pace of 5:46.16 to achieve the feat in his first race as a Bearcat.
Curtsinger led the way for Cincinnati in the 4k as she claimed the women's individual title with a personal-best and course record time of 14:02.73. This marks Curtsinger's first individual career cross country race win.
The men's team placed all five scorers inside the top seven for a total of 17 points to win the meet, while the women's team placed all five scorers inside the top 15 for a total of 48 points to get second in the meet.
The Cincinnati men captured the top four finishes. Junior Seth Elking took second with a time of 18:23.92, freshman Tiger Bartlett garnered third (18:39.57) and sophomore Thomas Ashby earned fourth (18:43.04).
Junior Bobby Ganser capped the Bearcats scoring with a seventh-place finish (18.52.75).
Curtsinger led the way for Cincinnati in the women's 4k as she claimed the individual title with a personal-best time of 14:02.73.
The women's team placed all five scorers inside the top 15 for a total of 48 points to get second in the meet, finishing just behind Indiana State who notched 33 points for the win.
The next four Bearcats to complete the course all finished within three seconds of each other. Sophomore Savannah Dennison placed 10th with a time of 14:41.26, juniors Gwen Stare finished 11th (14:42.79) and Sarah Madix took 12th (14:43.70). Rounding out the scoring for Cincinnati was sophomore Jocelyn Willis, who secured 14th place clocking a time of 14:44.42.

The Bearcats will head north to Savoy, Ill., to compete at the Fighting Illini Big Ten Preview. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13.
