NORTON, Ohio – Junior Claire Curtsinger and freshman Lucas Towne led the University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday.
The UC men's team placed 10th overall, scoring 327 points, while the women's team finished 15th overall, scoring 469 points. Notre Dame claimed the men's and the women's titles. Notre Dame's women's team is ranked No. 6 in the country while the men are No. 19.
Butler's William Zegarski (29:12.70) won the individual title in men's 10k, while Toledo's Mercy Kinyanjui (19:29.70) secured the women's 6k individual title.
A total of 10 Bearcats achieved new career best times.
Curtsinger led Cincinnati across the finish line, taking 13th place with a career-best time of 19:55.70, 33 seconds faster than her previous best. The California, Ky., native has been a standout all season, finishing first for the team in all six races and placing in the top 10 three times.
Junior Gwen Stare was the second Bearcat to cross the finish line, placing 66th with a personal-best time of 20:53.30, which is a 28-second decrease from her previous best. Sophomore
Jocelyn Willis finished third for the Bearcats, registering a career-best time of 21:43.30 (121st).
Rounding out the scoring were freshmen Christina Allen and Mia Heine. Allen registered a personal-best time of 21:54.30 while Heine secured a career-best time of 22:07.40.
On the men's side, Towne finished first for the men, as he clocked a time of 30:33.40 (53rd).
Graduate student Jed Helker was the next Bearcat to finish. The Edmond, Okla., native placed 57th, achieving a personal best time of 30:37.90, crushing his previous best by one minute and 23 seconds.
Junior Seth Elking and sophomore Gianni Allwein finished within six spots of each other. Elking placed 66th, with a personal-best time of 30:44.90, smashing his previous best by one minute and 27 seconds, while Allwein notched 72nd, clocking a time of 30:56.00.
Cincinnati's fifth finisher was junior Bobby Ganser. The Louisville, Ohio native set a career-best time of 31:00.80 (79th).
