This is the second year of the event as the Bearcats opened the 2009 season playing in the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge. The Bearcats begin the three-day event on Friday, Feb. 26, when it takes on Penn State at 1 p.m., before playing Purdue and No. 13 Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 27, and Sunday, Feb. 28, respectively. All three games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

BIG TEN/BIG EAST BASEBALL CHALLENGE

· Cincinnati is making its second trip to the Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge in as many seasons.

· The Bearcats played in the inaugural event in 2009, falling to Purdue (11-10), Michigan (6-1), and Ohio State (6-5).

· Ohio State will see two fimiliar foes this year in Purdue and Ohio State, while also playing Penn State.

· Senior Jamel Scott and junior Justin Riddell were both named to the 2009 BIG EAST/Big Ten All-Tournament team, presented by Collegebaseball360.com.

· Last year, Riddell opened the tournament with a 4-for-4 performance against Purdue, which included two home runs and two doubles, and proceded to hit .615, score four runs, collect four RBI, two doubles and three home runs.

· Riddell led the tournament in home runs (3), total bases (19), and slugging percentage (1.462), while tying for the tournament lead in batting average (.615). Riddell also ranked second among all players in on-base percentage (.643) and hits (8).

· Scott was impressive in all facets of the game during the tournament in 2009. Scott hit .500 for the week, went 3-for-3 in stolen bases, and arguably had the top defensive play in the tournament.

· In the fourth inning against Michigan, Scott raced back to the warning track and made an over-the-shoulder catch while slamming into the wall. For the week, Scott ranked in the Top 10 in batting average, hits, doubles, total bases, and stolen bases.

FEB. 19-21 - VS. FLORIDA ATLANTIC

· With snow on the ground for much of February, Cincinnati had very few opportunities to practice outdoors before its season-opening series at Florida Atlantic, Feb. 19-21.

· Despite the limited practice time outdoors, UC won its season-opening game against the Owls, 5-3, behind a strong start for junior Dan Jensen. Jensen went 5.0 innings, scattered three hits, struck out four, and gave up just one earned run to earn a win in his first career start.

· Senior Kevin Johnson and sophomore Cory Hough both hit their first home runs of the season and finished with two hits apiece, while freshman Logan Jackson registered a multi-hit game in his first collegiate appearance.

· The win marked UC's first opening-day win since defeating Duke, 3-2, in its 2004 season-opener.

· Unfortunately for the Bearcats, their offense struggled the last two days collecting three hits in a 3-0 loss on Saturday, Feb. 20, and five hits in a 9-0 loss on Sunday, Feb. 21.

· Despite the two losses, Cincinnati did get some experience for its newcomers as nine players saw action for the first time in a Bearcats uniform.
