COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The saying, 'everything is bigger in Texas' rang true for the University of Cincinnati track and field program Saturday as the Bearcats posted 22 personal bests while adding 17 marks to the program's all-time Top 10 ledger, including two more school records, as action came to a close inside the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the Texas A&M campus in College Station. Bryana Robinson (women's 400m) and Alex Bloom (men's heptathlon) record the top marks in UC history in their respective events as the Bearcats claimed eight overall victories and saw both teams finish in the Top 3 of the scoring.
// TEAM SCORING
The team-scored event saw host Texas A&M win both meets as the women scored 196.5 points and the men 127.5. In the women's standings, the Bearcats, who won six of the 17 contested events on the weekend, scored 129.5 points to sit second overall while Georgia Tech (72), Houston (71) and UT-Arlington (50) rounded out the Top 5. On the men's side, TAMU was followed by Houston (96.83), UC (72), Georgia Tech (68) and TCU (67) in the Top 5.
// FOR THE WIN
Overall, the Bearcats secured wins in eight events with the women winning six and the men two. For the women, Robinson lowered he own school record to 53.08 to win the 400m before her teammates won five of the six field events. Annette Echikunwoke swept the throws as she was victorious in the weight throw (22.27m/73-00.75) and the shot put (15.95m/52-04.00) while UC also claimed wins in both vertical events as Loretta Blaut remained undefeated on the season by winning the high jump with a meet-record clearance (1.84m/6-00.50) and Brooke Catherine captured the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 4.12m (13-06.25), the #4 mark in program history. Finally, Irati Mitxelena won the triple jump, using a bounce of 12.48m (40-11.50) in the fifth round to take the gold. On the men's side, Austin Edwards claimed the long jump with a huge PR of 7.62m (25-00.00), the #5 mark in program history, while Adrian Valles captured the pole vault with a best of 5.37m (17-07.25).
// RECORD BREAKER - ROBINSON
Robinson broke her own 400m dash mark as she ran 53.08 to win the event while lowering her previous best by 0.44 seconds. That time leaves her just 0.08 seconds away from becoming the first UC woman to run a sub-53 indoors. Robinson also ran a PR 23.92 in the 200m dash to not only move up to #3 all-time, but also become just the third UC woman to run a sub-24 in the event indoors in program history.
// RECORD BREAKER - BLOOM
Last year at this meet, Bloom put on a show for the Aggies faithful as he recorded numerous career-best marks in the individual heptathlon events to score 5,604 points, which left him 12 points shy of tying the school record that was set by his current coach, Chris Wineberg, in 2004 when he scored 5,616 points. Heading into today, Bloom had three more events to accumulate points and take down the record, which he did by 33 points, ending Wineberg's reign at the top that had lasted 14 years. Following the three events today, Bloom scored 5,649 points to better his previous best by 45 points and break the school record which, combined with individual heptathlon events, is the sixth indoor school record he owns.
Bloom opened the day running 8.70 in the 60m hurdles to collect 813 points before he cleared 4.55m (14-11.00) in the pole vault to not only scored 775 points, but also tie his heptathlon PR and the school's #5 heptathlon pole vault clearance. Needing to run close to his PR in the 1,000m run to close the meet, Bloom did just that and bettered his PR with a time of 2:46.50 for 803 points, the overall record and the #4 time in UC heptathlon history. So far, his overall score puts him in the Top 15 nationally with the Top 16 qualifying at the end of the season for the NCAA Championships that will be held at Texas A&M.
// GOING VERTICAL
Both women's vertical jump winners had big jumps on the day as Catherine (pole vault) and Blaut (high jump) each posted season-best clearances. For Catherine, the junior's clearance of 4.12m (13-06.25) is the #4 mark in UC history and stands as the best clearance by a Bearcats vaulter since the 2014 season. It also marks the fourth time she has cleared at last 13' in as many weeks.
For Blaut, today not only was her fifth high jump title in as many meets this year, but it also was the fourth week in a row she has posted a season-best clearance. The last four weeks have seen her win with clearances of 1.81m, 1.82m, 1.83m last week and 1.84m this week. With today's mark, she should remain among the Top 15 in nation.
// EDWARDS PICKING UP SPEED
Edwards' first indoor season continues to see the youngster shine bright as he not only won the long jump, but took second in the 60m dash, all while recording three of the team's Top 10 marks on the weekend. On the track, Edwards ran 6.81 in the preliminary and final rounds, equalling his finals time from one week ago and remaining at #2 on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger. In the field, his winning mark of 7.62m (25-00.00) not only placed him in the national Top 25, but it also ranks as the #5 mark in UC history. To top that, his jump tonight also stands as the longest posted by a UC man in 26 years (1992)
// LATTIMORE CONTINUES HOT STREAK
The streak for Tiona Lattimore is now up to nine in a row as the sophomore raced twice more Saturday to make it nine times in nine attempts that she has posted a personal best in an open race this season. First, she took part in the 400m dash and ran 54.24 to improve her all-time #3 standing at UC. She followed that up with a time of 23.85 in the 200m to improve her #2 standing in program history. Lattimore, who ran the 400m leg of the school-record DMR one night earlier, saw teammate Haisha Bisiolu run 24.16 in the 200m to move up to #5 all-time, giving the current roster three of the Top 5 times in program history.
// DIAL 'M' FOR FAST DISTANCE TIMES
It was another strong showing in the distance events for the women Saturday as two members of the school-record DMR from Friday night were back on the track and lowering times once again in individual events. First, the mile was contested with Meg Westerheide running a PR 4:58.70 to not only improve her #2 ranking in the program history, but also become only the second UC woman to break the 5 minute barrier in competition. Her time also is the fastest run in 16 years when Angie Kist ran the record (4:49.41) in 2002.
In the same event, true freshman Sam Mikula lowered her PR by 1.51 seconds to finish in 5:03.26, which ranks her #5 all-time in the mile. With that time, Mikula became the sixth UC woman to run under 5:04 with four of those individuals currently running for UC.
In the final event of the day for the women, Hannah Markel raced in the 3,000m run and posted a huge PR of 9:55.22 to become just the sixth UC woman to break the 10 minute barrier in program history. Markel, who lowered her time by 11.55 seconds, moved up from #9 all-time to #3 while posting the fastest time at UC sine the 2008 season.
// MORE SPEEDY TIMES
Two other men also turned in fast times on the track, including Jimmy Brooks in the 200m and Aaron Bienenfeld in the mile. Brooks ran to a time of 21.55, which lowered his PR by 0.02, and gave him the #4 time in program history. His time also stands as the fastest run by a UC man since 2004.
Bienenfeld, a mid-year transfer from Germany, ran just his third race as a Bearcat and collected his second spot on the program's all-time Top 10 list. Today, he ran 4:10.82 to move into the rankings at #9 all-time to go with his #9 standing in the 3,000m run as well.
// ON DECK
UC will venture to Nashville, Tenn., next weekend as the Bearcats will compete in the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt at the VU Multipurpose Facility. The meet will host a handful of events Friday, February 9, before the remaining events are contested all day Saturday, February 10.
