CINCINNATI - The 2019 indoor track and field season got underway Friday for the University of Cincinnati program as the Bearcats ventured to Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Ind., for the 2018 Hoosier Open. The meet, which featured athletes from UC, host Indiana, Purdue and Kentucky, saw the Bearcats tally 38 personal bests and 19 marks that found a home on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger. UC also captured wins in a pair of events as returning NCAA runner-up Loretta Blaut won the women's high jump and Sam Meece grabbed gold in the men's weight throw with another big throw.
// TOP STEP
Blaut, who entered the meet as the NCAA runner-up at both the 2018 indoor and 2018 outdoor national meets, cleared 1.82m (5-11.50) to easily win the event today. She cleared her first two heights on the opening attempts before needing a second try at 1.76m. She then used first attempt clearances at 1.79m and 1.82m before missing three times at 1.85m.
Meece picked up his win with a big improvement as he captured the weight throw with a heave of 19.27m (63-02.75). That mark, which ranks third in program history, was him become just the third UC man to break the 19m barrier as he improved his PR by 2' 4.75".
All told, the Bearcats added nine more Top 3 finishes on the day with the women posting six and the men three. On the women's side, rookie Rylee Penn raced to a time of 2:52.24 in her debut in the 1,000m run and placed second overall with the #2 time in UC history. A pair of teammates posted nearly identical times as Haisha Bisiolu and Tiona Lattimore ran 38.73 in the 300m dash to finish second and third, respectively. The duo posted times of 38.723 and 38.729, respectively, with Bisiolu's mark ranking #3 in program history (Lattimore ran the #1 time last year). Angelica Lightfoot finished third in the finals of the 60m hurdles in 8.55, which was 0.01 off her PR that she ran earlier in the day in the preliminaries (8.54), the #4 time in program history. For the men, newcomer Arthur Greenlee made the final of the 60m hurdles and raced to a time of 8.05, the #5 mark in program history
The final four Top 3 finishes came in field events with all five earning third-place showings. For the women, Irati Mitxelena jumped 5.94m (19-06.00) in the long jump to improve her indoor PR and the school's #4 all-time mark by 1cm (was 5.93m) while Allie Plybon had a nice day in the pole vault as she tied for third with a clearance of 3.85m (12-07.50), a mark that ranks her tied for #9 all-time at UC. For the men, Brandon White was third in the long jump at 6.89m (22-07.25) while Albert Kalala was third in the high jump at 2.05m (6-08.75).
// BIG IMPROVEMENTS
Several Bearcats joined Meece with big improvements over their previous PRs Friday. For the women, freshman Malin Smith hit a toss of 15.15m (49-08.50) in her debut in the shot put and improved upon her high school best by 3' 11.75" while Jane Sensibaugh improved by a nearly identical distance (3' 11.25") with her best of 13.74m. Sensibaugh, who was also making her debut for the team, is a sophomore that hasn't thrown in two years and recently completed her second season with the UC women's soccer team as a goalkeeper. For the men, Brandon White popped a big jump as he bounced his way to a mark of 14.41m (47-03.50), an improvement of 1' 8.25". His mark also moved him onto the school's all-time Top 10 at #10.
// TOP 10 WOMEN
Five more women's marks also rank in the all-time Top 10 with the 300m and 1,000m events producing big marks. Freshman Caisja Chandler ran 39.27 in the 300m to rank #5 all-time and join both Lattimore (#1) and Bisiolu (#3) in the Top 5 of the event while fellow rookie Faith Banks posted a time of 1:15.28 for the #4 mark in the 500m. Penn (#2) was joined by two of her distance teammates in the Top 10 as senior Sammy Hentz ran 2:59.54 for the #7 spot in the 1,000m while rookie Madalyn O'Dea ran 3:04.81 to tie for the #10 spot. Finally, Kennedy Marable had a big jump in the triple jump as she bounced her way to the #5 mark at 12.05m (39-06.50), making her just the fifth UC woman to record a mark of 12m or better.
// TOP 10 MEN

On the track, Greenlee, who posted the #5 time in the hurdles in the final, first ran 8.16 in the preliminaries to record the #8 mark.
