CINCINNATI - The first day of action at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships came to a close Friday night inside the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., with two members of the University of Cincinnati track & field program winning conference titles to pace the Bearcats to the halfway point of the competition. Angelica Lightfoot captured the women's pentathlon title with a meet record performance while Sam Meece blasted the UC record to capture his first conference title in the weight throw.

// IN THE STANDINGS
Both teams sit in third place overall with the women's team tallying 27.5 points through six events while the men scored 32.5 points in five events. Houston (38) leads the women's rankings, followed by Wichita State (31.2), UC, Tulane and SMU (24), Memphis (19), ECU (18), UCF (15), USF (13), Tulsa (12), UConn (7) and Temple (5). The men's championship is being paced by Wichita State (40), trailed by Tulsa (34), the Bearcats, Memphis (27), USF (18.5), Houston (17), UConn (16) and ECU (10).

// CHAMPION: LIGHTFOOT TAKE PENTATHLON
The Bearcats have fared well in the pentathlon in recent years with Lightfoot's win today keeping the event title in Cincinnati for the third year in a row after Naomi Urbano won the previous two crowns. Lightfoot won her first conference crown by scoring a personal-best 3,926 points to ran #2 all-time in program history and break the AAC meet record by 20 points. Now an all-conference honoree, Lightfoot opened the day running 8.56 in the 60m hurdles (UC pentathlon #2) for 1,004 points before clearing 1.68m (5-06.00)(UC pentathlon #4) to add 830 points. Sitting second overall in the standings, Lightfoot made her move in the shot put as she chucked the ball out to 13.30m (43-07.75) to not only score 747 points, but also break her own school pentathlon record in the event.

With her first overall lead of the day, Lightfoot pressed forward in the long jump and flew to a mark of 5.83m (19-01.50) for 798 points and the #2 position on UC's pentathlon Top 10 to take a 151 point lead into the final event, the 800m run. Despite the half-mile not ranking as her top event, Lightfoot did what she had to do and remain in striking distance of Adriana Janic (USF) so the Bull could not catch her in the standings. Lightfoot finished in 2:42.30 (Janic ran 2:38.27) to bring about the final margin of victory (131 points). All told, Lightfoot recorded an overall PR in the high jump and shot put while adding pentathlon PRs in the hurdles and long jump.

// CHAMPION: MEECE MASTER OF THE WEIGHT
After finishing fifth as a freshman last year and entering this year's event ranked fourth, Meece left little doubt about the outcome of the 2019 competition as he let the 35-pound ball fly on his first attempt, sending the implement to 20.98m (68-10.00), a mark that would stand as the best rest of the competition. Just two centimeters shy of the meet record, Meece's first conference crown - and the first since Josh Province's victory in 2016 - came with a school record as he became the first man in program history to throw the weight 20 meters or better. Entering with a best of 19.34m (63-05.50) from earlier this season, Meece not only took the school record, he did so with a PR of 5' 4.5" as he won the fifth weight throw title in program history.

// ALL-CONFERENCE FINISHES
Along with Lightfoot and Meece, one other Bearcat earned all-conference recognition (Top 3 finish in the meet) as Aaron Bienenfeld finished third in the 5,000m run. Bienenfeld, coming off a remarkable cross country season in which he advanced to the NCAA Championships, ran 14:26.54 tonight to place third behind a pair of runners from Tulsa, including Ben Preisner, who won the race in 14:24.62.

// BROKEN RECORDS
Two times turned in by freshman Caisja Chandler not only qualified the rookie for the finals tomorrow, but also saw her move higher in the program's history books. Chandler first ran the 60m prelims and finished with a time of 7.44, which is good enough to place her third all-time at UC while also breaking the school's freshman record. She followed that up in the 200m later in the day where she ran 23.76 to tie the overall school record (Kenya Woodall, 2016) while claiming her second freshman school record as well.

// BEST IN TEN-TIONS • WOMEN
Along with the records broken (and marks attained by Lightfoot in the heptathlon), the Bearcats women tallied seven all-time Top 10 and seven pentathlon Top 10 marks as well. Overall, Sammy Hentz dropped three second off her PR to run 2:10.02 and take the #2 position from freshman Rylee Penn in the 800m, who also had a PR in the race as she ran 2:10.11, as both will race in the final tomorrow after placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Lightfoot, while competing in the pentathlon, came back and ran the prelims of the open 60m hurdles where she earned a spot in the finals by running 8.43, the second-best time of the prelims, the #3 in UC history and her second PR in the event on the day. Staying on the track, the team of Sam Mikula, Haisha Bisiolu, Hentz and Sam Markel combined to run 11:50.01 in the distance medley relay to finish sixth in the meet with the program's fourth-fastest time.

Returning to individual performances, Leah Heckaman finished the weight throw with her best mark of the year and of her career as she sent the 20-pound ball out to 17.27m (56-08.00) to move up to #6 all-time. In the pentathlon, Katie Straus scored a PR 3,730 points overall for the #6 position all-time while also posting the #4 800m time (2:23.75), the #5 60m hurdles time (8.90), the #6 high jump clearance (1.65m) and the #10 shot put mark (11.12m). Rookie Sydney Spears joined in as well with her 3,517 points ranking #8 while her 9.20 in the hurdles and 2:27.40 in the 800m both ranked #9. Finally, Urbano ran 9.18 in the hurdles for the #8 position.

//BEST IN TEN-TIONS • MEN
The men also posted several marks that rank in the program's all-time Top 10 as one other weight throw mark and five heptathlon marks found a place in the ledger. Meece was joined in the weight throw Top 10 by Chris Province, who moved up to #5 with a PR of 18.32m (60-01.25), nearly a 4' improvement that made him just the fifth UC man to surpass 60' in competition. In the heptathlon, Damien Berthenet's first day score of 2,965 points ranks as the third-best in program history while two of his marks - 7.02m in the long jump and 7.32 in the 60m - rank as the #2 and #7 marks, respectively, in UC's heptathlon history. Cannon Riddle added a pair of heptathlon Top 10 marks of his own as he ranks #6 in the 60m at 7.31 and #9 in the shot put with a toss of 11.06m (36-03.50).

// GETTING TO THE POINTS • WOMEN
Along with Lightfoot's title, five other individuals and one relay earned points for the team Friday. Katie Straus was fourth (3,739) and Sydney Spears seventh (3,517) in the pentathlon while both Brooke Catherine (3.84m) and Allie Plybon (3.84m) tied for sixth in the pole vault. Irati Mitxelena rounded out the field event scoring as she was sixth in the long jump (5.80m). Finally, the DMR placed sixth for the final three points of the day.

// GETTING TO THE POINTS • MEN
