CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track and field team claimed six more victories and added 10 more marks to the program's all-time Top 10 ledgers as the Bearcats wrapped up competition at both the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational in Louisville and the 125th Penn Relays in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won one sprint, one mid-distance race and added four more titles in the field, including a sweep of the triple jump competitions, with both the men and women winning three events.
// SHOWING HER SPEED
Caisja Chandler had another solid meet on the track for the Bearcats as she won the 200m dash, was second in the 100m and helped the 4x100m relay to a runner-up finish as well. She opened the day running the second leg of the relay (Haisha Bisiolu, Tiona Lattimore and Faith Banks) that turned in a time of 44.99 to place second overall and move up to #8 on the program's all-time Top 10 list. Then, she raced in the final of the 100m dash and turned in a season and personal-best time of 11.53, which breaks her own UC freshman record (11.63) while tying her for second all-time in program history with both Kenya Woodall (2016) and Natasha Burse (2011). She is now just off the school record of Lattimore, who ran 11.52 last year. Finally, Chandler raced in the 200m dash and won with a time of 23.26.
// DOUBLE THE TRIPLE
The Bearcats captured both triple jump competitions as Irati Mitxelena was victorious for the women and Andre Wright for the men. In the women's event, the results listed an erroneous mark (23.67m/77-08.00) for Mitxelena, with her winning mark actually standing at 12.67m (41-07.00). Wright turned in his best mark outdoors as he bounced his way to a best of 15.24m (50-00.00) to post a season and career-best mark as well as the #4 mark all-time in program history while moving up to #2 in the current AAC standings.
// STEADY HENTZ
Chandler was not the only victorious runner for the Bearcats as Sammy Hentz won the 800m run in 2:10.94, which is just off her personal-best time of 2:10.38 run earlier this year at home. Hentz has been consistent this season as today's time marks the third meet in a row she has run 2:10 in the two-lap event. Heading into the outdoor season, she had reached that time only once in her career.
// THROWING DEEP
The final two victories came in the men's throws with Aaron Deaton claiming gold in the open division of the discus and Nicholas Lauria claiming the title in the javelin. Deaton won his division with a season and career-best mark of 48.25m (158-04), a nearly 8' improvement over his previous best of 45.95m (150-09) thrown earlier this year. While Lauria didn't post an improvement on his season and career-best mark, he did easily win the javelin title as he sent the spear out to 58.48m (191-10) to win by 10' on the day.
// ADDING TO THE TOP 10 • WOMEN
Five other women made edits to the all-time Top 10 two sets of teammates climbing higher in the same event. On the track, Banks ran 54.25 to finish fourth overall in the 400m dash with her PR ranking #7 all-time in program history and just 0.17 off the school's freshman record. In the 400m hurdles, both Kylie Cutlip and Grace Winckowski ran personal-best times and moved up the Top 10 with Cutlip running 1:02.17 to finish sixth in the race and take over the #7 spot in UC history while Winckowski ran 1:02.99 to take over the #8 position. Finally, in the pole vault, Allie Plybon and Sadie Brass both cleared 3.87m (12-08.25) to move into a tie for the #9 slot all-time.
// ADDING TO THE TOP 10 • MEN
The only other man to add his name to the Top 10 list Saturday was Sam Meece, who did so in the discus. Meece was in Philadelphia competing in the Penn Relays and took part in the Championship of America division where he placed fourth overall with a toss of 56.14m (184-02). This toss of the plate stands as the #2 mark in program history and makes him only the second man at UC to throw a mark of 56m or better, joining record holder Macklin Tudor.
// SO CLOSE
Four other individuals place second in their events, including Bisiolu in the 400m (53.92) and Katie Straus in the high jump (1.61m) for the women while Quincy Mitchell (10.56) and Arthur Greenlee (14.35) were the runners-up in the 100m dash and 110m hurdles, respectively, for the men. Additionally, three men earned bronze finishes, including Chris Borzor in the 400m (PR 47.23), Connor Duricky in the 400m hurdles (PR 53.67) and Albert Kalala in the high jump (2.01m).
// IN THE BLOCKS
One final tune up awaits the Bearcats before the post season begins as the team will travel to Bloomington, Ind., Friday to take part in the Billy Hayes Invitational hosted by Indiana. The one-day meet will be the final chance for the Bearcats to compete before heading to the AAC Outdoor Championships in Wichita, Kan., May 10-12.
