CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati student-athletes continue to find success in the classroom as the Bearcats have combined for a departmental grade-point average (GPA) of 3.328 for the Fall 2019 grading period, extending the current streak to 23-consecutive grading periods with a combined 3.0 or better GPA. While the overall GPA didn't break a record (3.372 last Spring), several other marks did fall, including five teams posting their highest GPA in program history.

On the team level, the men's cross country program posted the highest GPA of all teams on campus as Sam Burroughs' men combined for a 3.829 GPA in the Fall, making them one of the five programs with a record-high GPA. The tennis team, led by Eric Toth, posted the highest GPA of all women's programs on campus with their collective mark of 3.796. The teams were two of the eight Bearcats programs that recorded a GPA of 3.5 or better for the semester.

Along with men's cross country, four other programs posted the highest GPAs in their respective program's histories, a list that includes men's basketball, women's basketball, lacrosse and men's soccer. In basketball, first-year coach John Brannen's men recorded a 3.072 GPA while Michelle Clark-Heard's women recorded a GPA of 3.431. Under Gina Thomas, the lacrosse team is not only coming off its best season in program history, but also will enter the season following their highest GPA ever at 3.687 while Hylton Dayes' men's soccer players combined for a record mark of 3.261. All told, 16 of the school's 17 teams recorded a 3.0 or better for the semester with 10 reaching a 3.4 or better.

Individually, the department broke a trio of records as 336 student-athletes earned a place on the Bearcats Honor Roll (3.0+) with 249 of those Bearcats earning a spot on the Dean's List (3.4+) and a record 54 student-athletes earning TopCats honors for carrying a perfect 4.0 semester GPA. Included in those 54 TopCats were a semester-best nine lacrosse players and eight women's soccer players, many of which were part of last year's record-high GPA that also led the nation.

In addition the success of the student-athletes, the Bearcats' spirit squads continued to shine in the classroom as well as a combined 81 individuals (42 cheer and 39 dance) recorded a 3.0+ GPA. Of those individuals, 62 made the Dean's List (32 cheer and 30 dance) while 11 posted perfect 4.0 GPAs to earn TopCats honors (seven cheer and four dance). Overall, when combining all teams and spirit squad members, 417 individual attained a 3.0 or better GPA in the Fall with 311 earning placement on the Dean's List and 65 garnering TopCats status with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

All student-athletes and spirit squad members that attained a 3.0 or better GPA will be recognized during halftime of the January 28 men's basketball game against visiting SMU.
