SAVOY, Ill. – Juniors Claire Curtsinger and Seth Elking led the University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams at the Fighting Illini Big Ten Preview on Friday.
The UC men's team placed sixth overall, scoring 156 points, while the women's team finished ninth overall, scoring 201 points. Nationally ranked No. 13 Wisconsin claimed the men's title, while Northwestern won the women's title.
Curtsinger was the first Bearcat to cross the finish line in the women's 6k, as she placed 16th with a time of 21:01.8. This is the Kentucky native's second consecutive race finishing first for the Bearcats.
Junior Gwen Stare was next to finish with a time of 21:50.7 (41st).
Following Stare were junior Sarah Madix and sophomore Jocelyn Willis. Madix clocked a time of 22:01.6 (53rd), while Willis garnered a time of 22:11.9 (58th).
Sophomore Amber Carter was the fifth scorer for the women's team as she recorded a time of 22:17.5 (62nd).
On the men's side, Elking set a personal best time of 24:13.0 en route to a 22nd place finish in the men's 8k.
The next three Bearcats crossed the finish line within four seconds of each other. Freshman Lucas Towne secured a time of 24:23.2 (30th), graduate student Jed Helker obtained a time of 24:26.60 (32nd) and freshman Tiger Bartlett achieved a time of 24:27.4 (33rd).
Rounding out the men's scorers was sophomore Thomas Ashby with a time of 24:39.7 (42nd).

The Bearcats will head to South Bend, Ind., to compete at the Joe Paine Notre Dame Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4.
