  • The men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2010 season, 1-0, against Illinois-Chicago in the Akron Tournament opener last Friday in Akron, Ohio. The Bearcats then played the tournament host, No. 1 Akron, and fell 1-0 last Sunday. UC is 2-2-2 on the year.

  • The volleyball team upset No. 5 Illinois in the first match of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge last Friday in Louisville, Ky. The five-set match was the Bearcats' second win against a Top 20 team in the last 10 days. (UC defeated then-No. 16 Kentucky on Sept. 7). Cincinnati went on to defeat Purdue 3-0 on Saturday to win the Challenge and improve their record to 10-3 this season, which marks the second time in three years Cincinnati has gotten off to such a strong start.
  • The cross country teams finished ninth and 11th, respectively, at the 16th Annual Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions in the Bronx, N.Y. last Saturday.
The men's team finished with 237 points to earn 11th as a team, one point behind Kentucky in 10th. The women's team placed ninth in the Meet of Champions with 218 points, five behind eighth place Iona. Nine teams in the field for the women's race were ranked regionally.
In the men's race, which featured runners from 11 regionally ranked teams, including nationally-ranked Iona, Cincinnati junior Eric Finan finished first out of 207 runners to lead the Bearcats. Finan, who won the Meet of Champions last year in 25:21.60, improved on his time this year completing the 8K race in a time of 24:48.45.
  • The tennis team opened its 2010-11 season at the Bowling Green Invitational over the weekend. Freshman Ashleigh Witte made a big splash in her first collegiate competition, winning the Flight 3 Singles Championship. Junior Safiyya Ismail captured third in Flight 2, while sophomore Elise Woulfe did the same in Flight 3. Senior Lindsey Lonergan was runner-up in Flight 7 and the doubles team of Ismail and Woulfe finished third in Flight 3 Doubles to round out the top finishers for the Bearcats.
  • The men and women's basketball teams released their 2010-2011 schedules last week.
The men's schedule includes eight nationally televised games on the ESPN family of networks and 16 match-ups vs. teams that participated in postseason action last March. The Bearcats open the regular season with four straight home games in Fifth Third Arena. The season opener on Nov. 15 vs. Mount St. Mary's is the first of four games, which are part of the Global Sports Main Event, an exempted tournament.
The women's schedule will feature match-ups with some of college basketball's elite, including 10 versus 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. Second-year head coach Jamelle Elliott's Bearcats will host defending national champion Connecticut as well as cross-town rival Xavier, who advanced to the Elite Eight in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats open the 2010-11 season on Nov. 6 with an exhibition contest against Northern Kentucky, which made its fifth straight NCAA Division II tournament appearance last season.
