Here's what's coming up this week in Cincinnati sports:
- The baseball team will kick off the 2011 season with the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, Friday-Sunday. The first game will be at 1 p.m. Friday against Ohio State in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Bearcats will then take on Illinois at 10 a.m. Saturday in Clearwater, Fla. They will wrap up with a game against Michigan State at 1 p.m. Sunday in Clearwater, Fla.
- The men's basketball team will host No. 16 Louisville at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fifth Third Arena. The game will be televised on ESPN and on the radio on 700WLW. The Bearcats will then take on Providence at 7 p.m. Saturday in Providence, R.I. This game will be televised on ESPNU and on the radio on 700WLW. Cincinnati is 19-6 and 6-6 in the BIG EAST to rank 11th in the league standings.
- The women's basketball team will take on Villanova at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Philadelphia, Pa. The Bearcats will then come home to host Providence at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fifth Third Arena. Cincinnati is 8-15 and tied for 13th in the BIG EAST at 1-10.
- The women's lacrosse team will take on Davidson at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Davidson, N.C. The Bearcats will then play High Point at noon Sunday in High Point, N.C. Cincinnati is 0-1 on the season.
- The swimming and diving team will compete in the swimming portion of the BIG EAST Championships Wednesday-Saturday in Louisville, Ky.
- The women's tennis team will play in three home matches this weekend at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club. The first match will be at 6 p.m. Friday against Toledo. The Bearcats will then take on Dayton at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a match against Akron at 5 p.m. Saturday.
- The women's indoor track team will compete in the BIG EAST Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday in Akron, Ohio.

In case you missed it:
- The men's basketball team beat DePaul, 71-68 last Tuesday in Chicago, Ill. The Bearcats went on to drop a 59-57 decision against St. John's on Sunday at Fifth Third Arena.
- The women's basketball team dropped a 51-44 decision against Seton Hall last Saturday in Fifth Third Arena.
- The diving team wrapped up its portion of the 2011 BIG EAST Championships, Saturday at the Ralph R. Wright Natatorium. Brittany Teneyck picked up the best finish for the Bearcats with her fifth place effort in the women's 1-meter event. She tallied a six-dive total of 274.65 in the finals. In the 3-meter event, Krombholz was the top UC finisher in 10th with a six-dive total of 244.30.
- Nineteen football student-athletes were among the 135 members of the 2010 BIG EAST All-Academic Football Team. The Bearcats 19 selections were the most of any BIG EAST Conference team. To be nominated, a player must have a cumulative grade-point index of at least 3.0 and completed a minimum of two semesters of academic work. In addition, senior John Goebel was awarded the 2010 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
- The men's golf team opened its 2011 spring season at the Match Play last weekend at TPC Tampa Bay. The Bearcats opened the event with a 2.5-2.5 tie against St. John's, but St. John's advanced on a tiebreaker for winning more holes. UC then dropped a 3-2 match against host USF and followed with a 2.5-2.5 draw with DePaul. Again, DePaul advanced by winning more holes. Senior Joe Kastelic won all three of his matches at the event.
- The women's tennis team won its first match of the season, 7-0, over Seton Hall last Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y. UC went on to drop a 6-1 decision in a match against Syracuse last Sunday in Syracuse, N.Y. Ksenia Slynko won both of her matches at the No. 1 singles position for UC. The Bearcats are 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
- The track and field team competed in the Hoosier Hills Invitational last Friday and Saturday at Indiana University. The women's team had multiple event champions, led by junior Mackenzie Fields, who won the pole vault finals after setting a school-record height of 4.21 meters (13-09.75 feet). Sophomore sprinter Shanay Portis finished No. 1 in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.88. Freshman Cameron Gardner placed first in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.79 seconds. The men's team also fared well in Bloomington this weekend after senior thrower Troy Cooper got things started right for the Bearcats with a first place finish in the shot put, recording a throw of 17.27 meters. Junior Terrence Somerville won the 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 7.93 seconds, while sophomore Oliver Book placed first in the one-mile run after recording a time of 4:15.30.
- Volleyball star Stephanie Niemer added another distinction to her career resume, being named a 2010-11 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholarship Award winner.
