TAMPA - The first day of competition at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close Friday night at USF Track and Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
TEAM STANDINGS
Friday only included six scoring events - the men's and women's hammer throw, the men's and women's javelin, and the men's and women's 10,000 meter run. As of Friday night, the women sit in sixth place with four total points. The men are in second place with 31 points.
DOMINATION IN THE 10,000 METER
Aaron Bienenfeld won the 10,000m run for the third time in his Bearcats career, crossing the finish line with a time of 29:40.27. His final time was also a new championship meet record and also makes him the first Bearcat to finish in first place this weekend. Teammate Alec Sandusky ran into second place with a final time of 29:55.97 to finish the 1-2 punch on the podium. Christian Stevens finished sixth with a time of 31:09.82 to add three more points to the men's team score.
WOMEN'S HEPTATHLON RECAP
At the end of day one, Katie Straus leads the women with 3,307 points while only one point separates teammates Juliet McGregor (2,865) and Sydney Spears (2,864) for the 12th and 13th spots respectively. In the first event of the day, Straus broke a meet record and a personal record in the 100 meter hurdles with a final time of 14.05. She went on to also break a personal record not once -but twice - in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.70 meters. McGregor also broke a personal record in the high jump, clearing at 1.55 meters and tying for 15th place in the event with Spears. McGregor went on to also throw a personal best 10.71 meters in the shot put event. The final event of the day was a tight race in the 200 meter dash, where McGregor and Straus finished in the top three. Straus hit another personal record on the day, finishing the 200 meter at 25.65 to finish third.
MEN'S HEPTATHLON RECAP
Cannon Riddle leads the way for the men with 3,797 points while teammate Damien Berthenet comes in at sixth with 1,468 points. Riddle started the day by taking the top spot in both the 100 meter dash and the long jump events. He broke his personal record of 6.99 meters in the long jump when he finished with a jump of 7.13 meters. Finishing second in the 400 meter dash, he also broke his personal record clocking in at 49.22.
PERFORMANCES TO NOTE
The second day of competition gets underway at 10:30 a.m. ET with the decathlon followed by the heptathlon starting at 11 a.m. ET. The first field event gets underway at 3 p.m. ETwith the women's long jump while the women's 100m hurdles lead off the running events at 5:25 p.m. ET.

- Sam Meece was the first Bearcat to secure a spot on the podium Friday after throwing the hammer 61.38 meters, putting him in third place.
- Hannah Jackson threw the hammer 56.83 meters to put her in sixth plance and earn three points for the women.
- Maddie Walker added one point for the women's team after sliding into eighth place in the 10,000 meter run with a final time of 37:21.88.
- The women qualified three runners for the 1,500 meter finals for the first time in program history. Ellie Leather (4:25.96), Katrina Patterson (4:31.52) and Jodie Pierce (4:32.37) will represet the Bearcats in the finals on Sunday. Pierce also ran for a new personal record during the prelims.
- The men qualified two runners for the 1,500 meter finals on Sunday. Matt Hoak earned the eighth spot with a final time of 3:50.30 and Tyler Wirth slid into the finals in the ninth spot with a final time of 3:48.90.
- Caisja Chandler and Chris Borzor qualified for the 200 meter dash and will represent the Bearcats in the finals on Sunday. Isaiah McCall just missed qualifying for the finals, but finished the 200 meter dash with a new personal record of 21.55.
